We have a beautiful tropical mirror in stock. The mirrors of Explorer 1s from around 1965-66 sometimes age and become tropical. Usually the 3 o'clock side is tropical, but this one is even rarer, with the 9 o'clock side tropical. Usually the watch is worn on the left wrist, and the 3 o'clock side is exposed slightly from the shirt sleeve, and it is said to become like this when it tans in the sun, so this one is a left-handed tropical. In other words, the logic is that a left-handed person would wear it on their right arm. (Personally, I think this is due to the aging of the lacquer-based paint from that time, and not a typical sun tan.)
Either way, it is true that it will age and turn brown within this specific range.
As you can see in the picture, the gloss remains the same and only the color has changed beautifully, so there are no bumps or scratches on the dial. There is no fading of the luminous material or repairs. The hands are all original tritium, and the bezel and case are so original and sturdy that you would think they were unpolished.
The bracelet is a FF80/7806 rivet bracelet with the clasp stamped with 65th year 2nd period. There is some stretching, but we can also repair it separately.
EXPLORER1 1016 Lefty Tropical. It's been a while since I've come across such a good one.
