2015年製のROLEX Explorer I Ref.214270 Mk1です。

Ref.214270は、Explorer Iとして初めて39mmケースを採用したモデルです。従来の36mmケースからサイズアップされ、より現代的な実用性を備えた世代として登場しました。

本個体は、その中でも前期型にあたるMk1です。3・6・9のインデックスに夜光が入らない、いわゆるブラックアウトダイヤルを備えています。ブラックアウトは、1990年頃のRef.14270に見られる希少ダイヤルとして知られています。214270では作りは異なりますが、ミニマルな格好良さは共通していると思います。

6時位置に配されたEXPLORER表記も、214270 Mk1の見どころです。1950年代ごろのモデルから長く12時側に置かれてきたEXPLORER表記が、この214270では6時側へ。現行モデルではまた12時側に戻っています。こうした表記位置の変化も、214270を特徴づけるポイントです。

A 2015 Rolex Explorer I Ref.214270 Mk1.

The Ref.214270 was the first Explorer I to feature a 39mm case, marking a clear shift from the traditional 36mm size of the model. This example is the early Mk1 version, distinguished by its so-called Blackout dial, with non-luminous 3, 6, and 9 numerals.

The Blackout dial is best known from the rare early Ref.14270 examples seen around 1990. While the construction is different on the Ref.214270, the minimal and understated look created by the non-luminous numerals gives this Mk1 a similar appeal.

Another notable detail is the EXPLORER text positioned at 6 o’clock. For many years, from around the 1950s models onward, the EXPLORER text had been placed on the upper half of the dial. On the Ref.214270, it was moved to 6 o’clock, before returning to the upper half again on the current generation. This makes the dial layout of the Ref.214270 Mk1 especially interesting within the history of the Explorer I.

The short hands are also a defining feature of the early Mk1. Together with the 39mm case, Blackout dial, and lower EXPLORER text, they give this reference a distinctive character that differs from both the later Mk2 and the current 36mm Explorer I.
