1991年製、X番のROLEX Explorer I Ref.14270です。
Ref.14270は、サファイアクリスタル風防とCal.3000を備え、先代Ref.1016から大きく近代化されたエクスプローラーIです。36mmという完成されたサイズ感と高い実用性を持ちながら、初期個体にはトリチウム夜光やシングルバックルなど、ヴィンテージロレックスに通じる要素が残っています。
本個体は、光の角度によってゼブラ状の表情を見せるダイヤルと、トリチウム夜光がエイジングして生まれた綺麗なパティーナが魅力です。パティーナとは、経年によって夜光や文字盤に現れる色味や質感の変化を指し、個体ごとに異なる表情を楽しめる点が特徴です。
最近、同様にパティーナの出たRef.14270を何本か扱っていますが、こうした個体は90年代初期シリアルに多く見られる印象です。なかでもゼブラ状のダイヤルは珍しく、目の出方も一つひとつ異なります。通常のブラックダイヤルとは異なり、光の当たり方によって表情が変わる面白さがあります。
文字盤・針はともにトリチウムのオールトリチウム。ブレスレットも当時のオリジナルで、シングルバックル、クラスプコードの年代も製造年と整合しています。ケースはシャープに残っており、使用感も少ない良好なコンディションです。

A 1991 Rolex Explorer I Ref.14270, X-serial.
The Ref.14270 marked a major modernization of the Explorer I from its predecessor, the Ref.1016, featuring a sapphire crystal and the Cal.3000 movement. While it offers the refined practicality of a 36mm Rolex sports model, early examples still retain details that connect them to vintage Rolex, such as tritium lume and a single-lock clasp.
This particular example is distinguished by a dial that shows a zebra-like texture depending on the angle of the light, together with beautifully aged tritium lume. Patina refers to the natural change in color and texture that appears on the lume or dial over time, and it is one of the unique charms of vintage watches, as no two examples age in exactly the same way.
Recently, we have handled several Ref.14270s with similar patina, and from our experience, these examples seem to appear more often among early 1990s serials. Among them, zebra-like dials are especially uncommon, and the way the pattern appears differs from one watch to another. Unlike a uniform black dial, this example changes its expression depending on the light, which makes it particularly interesting.
Both the dial and hands are tritium, making this an all-tritium example. The bracelet is also original to the period, with a single-lock clasp and a clasp code that corresponds with the production era. The case remains sharp, and the watch is in very clean condition with little signs of use.
