The ref. 16520, which was released in 1988 and equipped with the Zenith El Primero and was automatic, remains immensely popular to this day. It remained Rolex's flagship for a long time until it was replaced in 2000 by the ref. 116520, which was equipped with an in-house movement. This early model (manufactured for about a year) is characterized by the fact that the last character of the text on the 12 o'clock side of the dial, "COSMOGRAPH", is printed with a space between the two, which is why it is commonly called the "step-down" or "floating" dial. Next, the bezel starts at 200 taps. Immediately after that, the bezel starts at 400 taps. Also, the black lines in the center of the hour and minute hands are extremely thin, called thin hands, and are one of the most important features of the early models. And lastly, the case is a little thick, which has led to it being called a kamaboko case in recent years. In reality, this is due to the difference in the lines from the base of the lugs to the tips.
